Hi,
does the lower bushing on the upper shift shaft go in with the larger I.D pointing downwards into the water and the tighter I.D. sticking up into the exhaust passage or the other way around? I can't find this detail in the manual and can't remember which way the old one was before I knocked it out, but I am pretty sure the larger I.D. points down.

Thanks,
Byron

Lip type seals always have the lip facing what is being kept in. Upper keeps lube from getting to water, and bottom keeps water from getting to lube

Edit: My bad, Sorry you were talking about the bushing not the seal

This isn't a Gen II, but I believe it is the same. Shows the shift shaft seals and their orientation.

HI,

thanks for the help. Yes, it is the lower bushing and not the seals that I am scratching my head over. I got the seals in (oddly enough both of the seals go in the same direction - lip up - in this application).

The Gen II's are similar, but not the same, even early and late Gen II's are slightly different. The later Gen II's have a lower bushing that is stepped inside (maybe they all do - not experienced enough). I am trying to figure out which way that lower bushing gets pressed in - I am pretty sure it goes with the larger inner diameter pointing down, but was hoping someone could definitively confirm that.

Small diameter, that fits the pin, is down.

On my bell housing, which was assembled by someone else, the bushing is smaller on the bottom and th eupper part that extends into the exhaust space is tapered down a little on the end. (This is a GenII, not my Alpha 1)
