Alpha 1 lower unit loose drive shaft

I have an 89 Sea Ray 5.7L with an Alpha 1. I removed the lower unit to replace the water pump. I noticed the drive shaft- not the prop shaft has side to side play as well as being loose if I pull on the shaft. Is this normal? The engine has approx 250 hrs.

Ayuh,... It's Loose, til reassembled...

Pull up on the drive shaft... While holding a good amount of pressure recheck your side to side movement... it should be gone... If so, reassemble water pump... have a beer, reassemble drive, have a beer. Put leg on the boat... have a beer, go boating (and get done for drunk and in charge of a boat )
