I have a mercruiser 4.3 with an alpha 1 outdrive.. it won't plane out on water, just bogs down at 3.5k RPM and drags. I replaced the oil in the outdrive, somewhat milky but didn't see a lot of metal shavings. I noticed when I put it in gear and give it a lil gas it clicks, also gets louder when I push in on the propeller. Doesnt seem to click when its lowered

Also rebuilt the carb, plugs etc, engine seems to run great.

The threads seem fine....

Not sure of what your problem is with the planning and bogging issue... but the milky oil is not good. You need to find out where the drive is leaking. The milky oil means water intrusion.

Are you putting it into gear with the drive all the way up? That's a no-no. Always make sure the drive is down before engaging in gear.

I am not sure what you mean by the noise gets louder when you push in on the propeller.

Usually when you push in on the propeller when the engine is in gear, that means you no longer have a hand.

K, that makes sense. yeah I need to find the leak, hope its just a bad seal. Can the milky oil cause loss of power?

Still have to figure the planning thing out, the distributor cap had some corrosion which I cleaned, might have to replace.

for the milky gear lub, ya will need to pressure test the drive to find the leak.

agree w/others. not real good to start your engine with the drive all the way up. in gear or not in gear. assuming it's in neutral, everything in the drive except the prop shaft is rotating when ya start it up. when in f or r, the prop shaft spins too. as for pushing in on the prop? i dunno about that either.
one thought might be that you need to check your ujoints. they can click when worn out when at severe angles. have ya pulled the drive to check them? fwiw, there's other pm to do with drive removed too usually.

go to the adults only sticky thread at the top of the i/o forum. in there you'll find two interesting threads. one for pressure testing the drive, the other for engine won't reach wot spec. plenty of other great stuff in that sticky thread too. good reading.

as for the cap ya cleaned up. replace it. imho, this would be part of a minor tune up. ya might consider a mercruiser cap too. i got a napa one once and the difference was notable between a mercruiser cap and a napa cap. mercruiser being more robustly made. comparison pics available if ya want them.

If you are hitting an engine RPM of 3500 and you are not planed out, seems like something is very wrong. You should be up on plane by the time it hits 2500, sounds like the prop might be slipping and you are not getting full power to the water. I would check the prop.

usually clicks mean your not in gear all the way. maybe need to adjust or replace your cables. also if you dont have the prop on and you start it out of the water it usually wont go into gear all the way. if your u joints are clicking that means the bellows boot is/was torn and water go into it and rusted out the u joints and the seal is prob bad where the driveshaft goes into the drive causing your oil leak. its like 60 bucks for an oem seal kit to reseal the entire upper unit. need one special tool(spanner wrench) and some pretty good mechanical skills to complete task.

I would pull the drive(very easy, 6 nuts) and see whats going on inside that boot. even if there is no gear oil or rusty parts its cheap insurance but i bet there will be. both alpha one drives ive owned leaked gear oil and got water contamination
