Re: alpha 1 outdrive noise PLEASE HELP

thanks for the quick reply. that is not my idle speed. sorry for the confusion. i hear this noise when i rev the engine up a little bit (round 2000-3000rpms). i have not had the boat in the water yet because i just brought it out for the spring. i am skeptical to bring it out with this noise. i'm not sure if i would hear it in the water but i would guess that i would. i just heard it when i had it running at my house with the hose hooked up to the outdrive. please help further.
jonathan

Have you changed the outdrive oil yet? Look at the oil to see if there is any contamination in the oil. The drain plug is magnetic and will show if any filings are there. I have heard that a small amount of filings are sometimes seen, but I am sure others have more experience at this then I have.

wow
that is way to much rpm with no load. things will bang and knock all over. if it ran ok when you stored it and the outdrive is still full of oil it is probably ok. but 2500 on the flusher is bad mojo with no load.
good luck and keep posting

thanks for all of the replys. when i posted the first times, i was guessing about what rpm that i heard the sound but since then, i changed the fluid (little low) and i was only reving to about 1700 rpm. anyhow, the noise is gone...at least i think it is gone...and there were a few small shavings. i think most of those where probably from when i rebuilt the outdrive last summer. thanks again guys.
jonathan

Re: alpha 1 outdrive noise PLEASE HELP

hi guys, newbie here. the problem described here is much like the one im having. i just recently bought this boat and have been going over it. the boat was started a few times and ran but i always had the outdrive flush connection on it. but after reading some posts here im wondering if i may have screwed my u joints because im pretty sure the outdrive was up most of the time it was ran. things ive done to it include changing plugs engine oil outdrive oil and installed a new carb kit. the noise i was hearing was much like the one here (clanging metal on metal type noise) around the drive shaft, then i had it on the water i heard the noise then a few seconds later it was like the outdrive got bound up in some way and cocked the steering wheel and quit. now when i try to start the engine it tries to turn over but the whole outdrive wants to turn, its bound up in some way but im not sure what could cause this? the boat is a 88 starline with a mercruiser inboard 3.0 alpha one. another note the prop will still turn freely by hand. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you put the drive into forward when you pull it.
