Dropped the lower drive unit to replace impeller and while putting it back in realized that there was an o-ring left up in the housing. Took that out and put it back on the drive shaft, but then saw that the lower oil seal was ripped. Anyway getting a new seal tomorrow. I am assuming that the o-ring goes on the shaft in the groove and then gets pushed through the oil seal? This is a 1987 out-drive.

DO NOT use a new "O" ring.
The seal itself will suffice.
They are infamous for tearing out those seals during routine maintenance...and were eliminated in the next generation anyhow.

Thank-you! Thats what I figured. I also read up on an older thread that said just to pack the area above the seal with grease prior to re-installing.
