My brother is buying a 87 checkmate with a 454 400hp and it has a alpha drive instead of a bravo. this is the third drive put on the boat. Can you bolt a bravo drive on after removing the whole assembly, or is there drilling envolved ?

You will need to cut a larger hole for the transom assembly, suggest that job be hired out, 3 alpha drives with 400hp is no surprise, that drive will handle up to 300hp but on a lighter boat. Its certainly worth a Bravo if he intends to keep the boat, that job here goes for around 5-6 grand or more.

The Actual Cut-out in the Transom is Nearly Identical............
You Might Possibly need to Trim it a Very Little Bit.....
You'll Also need to drill 2 more holes, Between the upper most,+ 2nd set of holes........
It's the Same Bolt Pattern as the Alpha1 GenII.....
8 bolts, instead of 6.........
