In 2003 Mercruiser discontinued the use of the rear "wound" washer. Is this also aplicable to older Alpha 1's when replacing the rear engine mounts?

Depends on the rear mount that is used. the new type is knurled on the bottom.
I prefer the old type with the spring.

Gentlemen thanks a million, just as I thought but on the same line: why eliminate the fiber washer it appears this would prevent the housing and the transom plate from touching each other...? Thanks again and regards

Re: Alpha 1 rear engine mount

Hi Don, That appears to be an old bulletin as the instructions with the kit are different.

The new style rear mount kits now have the fibre washers back in them. The kit also contains 2 stainless washers for adjusting the rear height if the inner transom plate is worn.

Just fitted a set of new style, bought from the local Mercruiser dealer, on my '74 140HP and the set came with the fibre washers and the instruction stated that the fibre washers had be placed back in the kit to prevent the housing hitting the inner transom plate.

Can't find the instructions that came with the kit. (garbage bin after finishing work I think)

Re: Alpha 1 rear engine mount

I recently replaced mine. used the newer kit with gthe knurled mount inserts. the instructions said not to use the fiber washer and to use the stainless washer only if needed to move the mount up a litte for alignment purposes. I found that not only did I not need the washers, but that it moved the rear of the engine up a bit without them - probably just validation that my rear mounts had sagged...

I see no difference in vibration or noise without the fiber washer there and would worry that the sharp edges on the knurled mounts would cut into it anyway. My understanding was that if you use the knurled mounts, you eliminate the fiber washer...

Re: Alpha 1 rear engine mount

Hi Tim,
The fibre washer does not carry the mount. The bottom of the mount fits through the hole in the fibre washer and sits on the inner transom plate. All the weight of the engine is carried by the mount and transferred direct to the inner transom plate. The fibre washer should not have any engine load on it and should float free.

The fibre washer takes the weight if the mount fails to prevent the flywheel housing contacting the the inner transom plate.

Hi Don, the last post was the instructions that came with the new mounts. You the man.
