My brother brought me another Alpha 1 lower unit that he had from his boat, that i bought from him. The main gears are stripped out. I want to rebuild it, so that i will have a spair.

Should i just replace the 2 main gears that are stripped out or buy the whole rebuild kit? Everything else looks to be in good shape.

You can get a brand new SEI drive for cheaper than the parts your going to need to rebuild it.

have you read service manual #6. the section devoted to lower unit servicing.
this is where i'd start at.
it will likely tell you exactly what to inspect ea. individual part for as far as serviceability of the part in question goes. then you'll be able to decide which parts to replace. the service manual will also let you in on what kind of special mercruiser tools will be necessary to complete the task..

meesh is right about the cost too...

The gears don`t normally strip, there heat damaged from a lack of oil. That said, all bearings are subjected to heat damage too. If you lose a roller from a "looks good set" ,that will tear up the new gears.
