alpha 1 skeg

i was idleing in shallow water (maby 5mph max) and hit a rock but the boat was still handeling fine. when i pulled up to shore to change to a diffrent pitch prop,
i noticed a chunk of the skeg was missing but it isint to bad.

i would like to put some kind of sked gard on it

does any one have any experince with the diffrent options like blackfin or skeggard?

i like the idea of not haveing to drill to put the blackfn on and the price is lower

its not bad enough to consider welding a new one on but i would like some additonal protection

I also like the Blackfin...and will be using that, when the time arrives.

But...since the Blackfin is glued into place, you may have to decide if you have enough remaining 'area', for a dependable bond.

I just read some reviews on the Blackfin and most were good but there were multiple people where the glue did not hold and felll off.

Just make sure the material is prepped to the letter as explained by whatever instructions come in the box.

Ah come on, your boat's not properly broken in unless there is a chip in the skeg. I have yet to see a boat that is over 1 year old with a perfect skeg.

Why not just have the skeg repaired? A local fellow who repairs props, also repairs skegs. He just welds a new piece of aluminim in and grinds and paints. You wouldn't know it had been repaired.

I have seen a lot of skegs welded including my own. Most come out OK, but a few were not so lucky. You have to remeber aluminum transfers heat very quickly and can definately do some damage to your gear case. As Jason said if you prep correctly the repair skegs will stay on. They work great, why take the chance? If I ever damage mine again, I will be using a repair skeg.

I put the chrome skeg guard from Overtons and it works and looks great.

my problam with having it repaired is the 2hr drive (one way)to the nearest shop that will do it and i dont like the idea of heating it up heat causes too much dammage

I had a skeg guard on my alpha 1. I even went so far as to fill the bottom with an aluminum filler to take up the space (Overkill) Its a very stout unit, at least as strong as the aluminum. The holes are no big deal, your already missing 1/2 of it! My personal preference is it looks better/cleaner like it belongs there.
