Some of you might rember a while back I was asking about putting an automotive engine in my boat.It has a closed cooling system so I opted to put the automotive engine in with brass freeze plugs and all the marine electronics.Thing fired right up with the muffs on the outdrive. Its not circulating much if any water through the exhaust,is my outdrive water pump bad or did I do something wrong?I put everything back as it was everything else seemed to be working. Thanks for any advice you may have.
Jonny

Is it overheating? When is the last time you dropped the lower and replaced the impeller and housing and waterpump seals?

Trent it did not overheat but when i saw the paint begin to smoke on the exhaust manifolds I shut it down. The engine temp never got above 150 but there was no water going through exhaust.I dont know the last time impeller or seals were done as I got the boat a few months ago for free.Im up to around $1300 now so its no longer free but still a good deal.

Re: Alpha 1 stern drive question

Just a stab in the dark. Years ago I used an industrial gasket set on a herculese based marine engine.Exhaust manifold gasket was the same but no holes to let water into exhaust manifold.
Fortunately i discovered this before I assembled it,made my own holes and it ran perfectly.
If you have the correct gasket is it in right?
Not much help,good luck, Spike

Spike gasket is in right and water will flow with garden hose.Im new to I/Os and think that the pump in the outdrive is probably bad but Im not sure.I should replace it anyway but want to make sure this is the problem. Are there other things I should be looking at? Thanks Guys I appreciate your help.Jonny

You should for sure change the impeller in the outdrive any way, so when you do that it will be obvious if this was the cause of the problem.
