I have a 1984 Del Magic,470 & Alpha 1 Drive. I removed the lower end of the Sterndrive to change the water pump. When I went to re-install the lower end I noticed that the upper oil seal is bad. Can I just remove it from the bottom? It looks like there is a cup that holds the oil seal in. Is this true, can I pull It from the bottom?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

Thanks,

Billy

there's 2 oil seals. the lower one can be removed and replaced from the outside. the upper one requires full disassembly of the upper to replace.......

Re: Alpha 1 sterndrive Oil Seal

Is there a retainer that holds the outside seal and does it require a special tool to remove it (the retainer)?

Thanks again,

Billy

Re: Alpha 1 sterndrive Oil Seal

no retainer. just friction + locktite 27131. mercruiser part number, 92-809820....

on my 1 drive i used a seal puller ya can get at any autoparts store. i just used a socket to drive in the new one. there is a special driver to put it in though.

sounds like you need a service manual.
check this thread out.... #6 is for your drive. confirm proper service manual by serial number.... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=251571
the service manual has all the facts in it for you.....
