alpha 1 upper / lower assembly

I have read thru archives and merc manual on this but need clarification:

prop is not properly engaging - remote shifter will move forward but will not go in reverse - shift cable is ok - shift coupler is in forward position -

Does the lower shift shaft have to be rotated to a specific position before placing upper unit ?

What is the trick to keep prop shaft in forward gear while installing ?

Here is a link that should help. Scroll all the way down to the last two pages. In one of the pictures they show the shift shaft, designated by an (a). If you will put some heavy grease (wheel bearing grease) on the top of the shift shaft then shove it up into the upper shift shaft lever on in the drive bellhousing it will remain in place till you get the drive foot installed.

Are you installing the complete drive (upper and lower as an assembly) ? Or are you installing the lower gear case onto the upper gear case ?
