I should be finishing my repairs today! Though manuals show how to use the bellows retainer ring drive tool, it is not very clear on the orientation of the ring itself.

Re: Alpha drive genII drive bellows retainer ring

Hi there, You may want to watch a few youtube videos of how to install the u-joint bellows to help give you some ideas to make things a little easier for you to get this job done correctly. Here is one and at around the 8:00 minute mark, you'll be able to see how the ring is installed.

One of the best things to use to aid in the installation of the ring is Power Tune available at a Mercury dealer.

Bellows Installations Guide - YouTube

Hope this helps, Good luck.:)

Re: Alpha drive genII drive bellows retainer ring

Thanks that was a n helpful video. I have run into other problems first. I have attached everything to the gimball housing except shift cable bellows. I don't see how it is possible to attach water hose to bell housing second? Any advice on sequence of installation would be helpful.

Ok never mind the previous post. got all the hoses hooked up, UJ bellows installed, I think. Not sure what to look for to confirm that the retainer ring is seated properly. Got the bead on the bellows in the groove, then wacked the retainer ring a few times with the retainer driver and 4lb. hammer. Am suppose to see part of the grove? Or just know that it is good enough?

The ring should have a bottom out feel to it once it is in, and you shouldn't be able to pull it out by hand once in. To be sure it's in, you could also try measuring the distance from the outer edge of the bell housing to the retaining ring and likewise on the drive. It's about 2 inches if I recall correctly.
