Hi guys, new here to this site, was recommended by a fellow who said this was the best place to get advice. I just got my first boat, a 16 foot Thundercraft bowrider with a 3.0 litre Merc. Got it being told the outdrive needed to be changed. The outdrive is in pieces in a box, previous owner took it to the marina who quoted him too much money to fix, now I'm trying to figure out what was wrong with it so i can fix it as cheap as possible.
Gears in the upper housing are completely stripped, so I ordered a new upper unit, not sure of the condition of the lower unit, don't know how to take it apart. When I rotate the shaft, there is a slight grinding feel in it, is this normal when the lower unit is off the boat and dry of oil? I imagined it would feel smooth as silk. The prop had a nick out of one of the blades, previous owner obviously hit something, and I'm not sure how long he ran the prop like that. If this grinding noise isn't normal, i guess the vibration of the bad prop ruined the lower unit too.
So my question is, do I need to go buy a lower unit too? Or will it be ok when i put it together and fill it with oil?
