my first time changing a water pump.....<smirk>....

CONNECTION COUNT-- let's count the bolts:
1 bolt hidded aft of outdrive,
2 bolts starboard,
2 bolts port,
1 bolt covering finned annode,
??? 1 bolt (an allen bolt) hidden inside of annode hole ???

Also, in all of my readings and net-following, i find that there is no seal for the outside of the ourdrive between the lower and upper units.

How do I seal or protect the circumference of the lower and upper units ? Does it not take a seal ?

when i bought a water pump kit, I received seals that have gaskets fit for the <<inside>> connections, but none for the outer circumference of the drive.

how does the outer circumference keep the water out...or does it flow freely internally thereabout ? does it simply take marine grease ?

I've heard that sometime the lower/upper will bond and you need a putty knife to carefully separate the two. If stuck, is there a preferred separation method that won't injure the aluminum ?

Should I grease the joining studs when i put them back together ?

Best think you can do is STOP NOW and read the service manual :)

Its not that hard BUT you really need to study it LOOK at the pictures showing what grease and sealent to use in what place ect

That tiny black quad-ring on the penny is all thats between you and and a leak

I allways advise keeping my tool kit around

When you sure everything is out it will require a bit a wedging with a small sharp screwdriver to pop it open

It's Water on Both Sides,...... No Gasket Needed......
