I have a 1994 Chaparrall w/ 4.3L Mercruiser Alpha I (Gen II) sterndrive. The trim oil resevoir has the small hole in the cap.
I started having a problem with the drive going down only about 7/8 of the way (when first starting boat) and it got progressively worse to where it only went down about 1/3 of the way. After I put the boat in gear and accelerated I could then get the drive down the rest of the way, with the pump straining a bit. Once it's down and the boat is under way the trim works either way(obviously going down because of force of forward thrust). There is no problem with the drive going up.
There is no indication of an oil leak (no film in the water).
On inspecting the resevoir, it was milky (water in oil). It also was a brown color which meant it was probably just regular motor oil.
I completely drained the system and replaced it with Dextron III.
On land the drive went up & down with no problem 6-7 times.
I put the boat in the water and the tilt worked fine for a couple of times and now the problem is starting again. It definitely happens only after it's in the water. The trans fluid is red and I can't tell if there's water in it. It's not milky at all.
It's obviously something with the hydraulic cylinders but I'm not sure what (seals?, piston?)
Any ideas?
Thnx,
Robbie
