The Bravo drives have cone clutch shifting located in the upper gear housing (Similar to Volvo), the Alpha drives have dog clutches located in the lower unit. The Bravo I has a lighter duty more streamlined lower unit, while the BII is a lot heavier built. The Bravo 3 has twin props.<br />Alpha and Bravo drives are not interchangable. the transom shields and bellhousings and shift setup are different.

So are the bravo drives better than the alpha? Do they shift better/smoother?

Simple, what are you trying to find out???? Maybe just saying what you are wanting to do would be better than asking questions about things you can't do, and getting answers that won't help.

Just curious that's all. I have the alpha 1 and when someone asks me what's the difference between mine and the other drives I want to be able to give them an answer besides I don't know.

I understand completely. I thought you might be looking at trying to swap a Bravo drive for the Alpha you have behind your 4.3L.
