When replacing the outdrive fluid, I had a hard time pumping in the new fluid. It took excessive pressure to get it to fill. What could cause this? (Yes, the top plug was removed...lol)

Seems to drain okay (I guess). Never serviced an outdrive before this one, so I don't have a camparison. No on the external reserve.

I also thought the vent would be plugged, but am not sure there is one..? In autos, every gearcase is vented, but not sure about a boat gearcase that gets submerged. So....is there a vent? If so, where is it?

Forgot to add..........I removed the outdrive, and there is a fair amout of gear oil in the bellows. If there was a clogged vent, pressure built up in the gearcase would push oil past the seal of the input shaft.

Correct????????

yer alpha1 will be slightly different. but ya see the three nuts that hold the drive on from the port view. right behind (aft) the two top studs and nuts is the vent screw (the silver circle) which must be removed to drain or fill the drive with lub..

I had the upper screw (vent) out when I filled the drive from the lower (drain/fill) hole.

When I say "vent" I'm thinking of a way for gear oil vapor to escape from the gearcase. An outdrive prolly dosen't have one, or water could easily get in I'm guessing.

If you have gear oil in the bellows, your front seal is leaking.
