Alpha One Gen 1 grinds going into gear

Was out the other day and lost FWD gear. Came back and pulled the drive off and the lock wired keeper on the back of the shift cable had worked it's way off due to a lousy/loose safety wire job. Put it back in just shy of the hole and then re-safety wired it. Put her back together and now she grinds hard going into both Fwd and Reverse. Is this something that can be fixed with a simple cable adjustment or worse?

Adjust the cable, see how it goes.

install the threaded stopper until it bottoms out with the cable end, then back it off just til the shift slide rotates freely on the cable. then install the safety wire

sounds as if you have too much play in the slide, or there is wear in one or more shift linkages/cables
