Did you check for excess 'slop' in the cable system? (one of the first things in the video). If the shoe (between upper and lower housing) is splayed slightly, or the grub screw in the end of the shift slide isn't set EXACTLY right, or the roller on the upper shift shaft lever is worn.... You get the idea. You have to eliminate all the places where excess movement can be introduced. That is what you problem sounds like.

When you install a new cable you cannot leave more than 2 threads showing

Soo on the upper shoe is there suppose to be a small amout of play where the lower shoe meets the upper shoe?

Define 'small'... (When I'm setting them up, I shoot for zero)...

Think I'd pull the drive off and have a look at the cable area (where the cable is screwed into the bellhousing) for build up/crud keeping the cable from being pulled back far enough..

You need to remove the pinion gear before the propshaft will come out. And you need a special tool to remove the pinion nut.

Forget videos, go by the factory service manual. Most people doing videos are not Merc trained technicians. And some of the videos I have watch left me SMH.....

Heres a better question . Why are you taking things apart without the manual BEFORE you know what is wrong?????????????????????
