OK, so last night I was making some final preps to get everything put together tomorrow when the engine arrives. One thing I've been meaning to do is replace the water pump in the outdrive. So I take it apart and this is what I find.

So obviously this thing is sandy and dirty. Is this normal? What should I be looking for on the upper and lower unit which would indicate a significant problem?

When I bought the boat, I checked the lube, checked the prop only spun in the direction of the gear selected. When I brought it home I drained the lube and it looked clean, a few metal shavings on the magnet.

The shaft coming up from the lower unit was caked with crud, the shaft has some minor grooving near the spline, and the pump housing has some minor grooving. Also the seal at the water pump is rotted and the oil passage seal is toast too. Last thing, the front threaded hole is stripped.

So you have no idea when the water pump was last serviced?
Someone else may have some other more technical shaft advice but I'd say clean it up the best you can, do a full water pump service kit and pressure test it before re-filling with lube.

No idea on the pump. It actually looks pretty good inside. The housing wasn't scorched at all. I've ordered all new seals and a new housing just in case.

Good catch. I was done working when I took the pics. Normally I wear my work steel toes when I'm working.
