This is my fault for not taking better pictures upon removal of the shift shaft bushings and need some help on the new install of the seals and bushing on the bellhousing. In the service manual it shows from bottom up both seals then the bushing. Can someone tell me how the the seals need to be installed, not sure if they need to be face to face then the bushing. Face meaning side opposite of the metal ring. Attached is a picture of the bushings and seals. Below is the boat information.

Both seals should face (garter spring side) the same way. Down, to keep water from coming up from the exhaust below. The bell housing chamber above should be dry.

Scary part is, the manual has that the other way.(#14, page 4B-37)

So they need to be installed like this with the bushing on top correct, grater spring down on both and bushing sitting on top

In spite of what the drawing shows, yes. The garter spring should face whatever you are trying to keep out. You can see that as pressure builds on the garter side the seal would get tighter, the other way the pressure would tend to push the liquid past the seal. Can't see any reason to do it the way the "book" shows.

Exactly. Me thinks they screwed up, for whatever reason. Having the lip and spring upwards would not do very well keeping water out.
