Hi Everyone, searched and couldnt find answer..

Just finished replacing the gimbal bearing, all bellows, oil feeder line and water tube.

Last part of job, the aluminum expander ring that fits into the aft of the ujoint bellows..slid in place with a home made tool, appears to be holding the rubber groove in place.
Question is, this aluminum ring is to be installed with an bellows ujoint expander tool. Is this tool fashioned to literally expand the aluminum ring, or simply slide the ring into place? My ring can be moved a little by hand even though it seems to be in place.

Thank you for your time and input!

Ayuh,.... Don taught me the Power Tune Trick for installin' that aluminum ring,...

Ya get everything put into place, 'n when yer ready to install the ring,...
Ya squirt Power Tune all 'round where the ring seats, 'n Push it in with yer fingers,....

The Power Tune evaporates, 'n it's a Done Deal,...

Re: Alpha One Gen 2 Ujoint Bellows Aluminum Ring

Hey guys, thanks much for the replies..

Did use engine tuner by Johnson, dealer was out of the merc stuff..key word, evaporates! Using soap was a bad first choice!

The engine tuner did evaporate, post set 4 hours now and the ring is tight as can be..didnt realize how simple the ring was, the entire removal and install of bellows, gimbal bearing, water and oil tubes went easy, but the thing threw me for a hoop! Pun intended..
Quick history on me float, she's a 96 Bayliner Capri 1750 , bought her used Feb. 2012 , she was repowered already with a 3.0 Mercruiser, and rebuilt alpha one gen 2 .. They left the bad gimbal in, bought her blind because of winter weather but at a good price..she didnt see alot of action since I had her, that grinding that began the replacement process is dealt with now.. Lucky for me no damages from the faulty gimbal that had 1/8" play side to side and there was water in the ujoint bellows but no cracks in the old one..thats what lead to believe having an automotive background the ring may need to be pressed against the sides .The Seloc manual I have here is vague at times and this was an area where the proper seating came into play. Ujoints are rusty although new on the rebuild, but swapping them out to be safe.
Thanks again, Best, Walt
