Hi all,
My sterndrive was recently written off due to hitting a submerged object. I bought a used lower unit from a local marine shop and they stripped, inspected, replaced top bearing, shimmed, and resealed my upper unit. New impeller kit and fresh oil. I now have a whirring/whining sound that goes away at 1200rpm. No change when turning left or right and there is no noise when I'm in reverse gear. This only happens under load, not when running on the garden hose. The prop isn't rubbing on the housing.
The shop I bought it from say it's nothing to worry about but I don't want to end up stranded somewhere. They have said they can come for a sea trial but not until next month.
Has anyone had a similar issue? Looking at exploded diagrams the gearbox has a dog clutch so forward/reverse gears are always engaged when the motor is running? Does the fact it happens in forward gear and only under load point to possible worn forward gear?
