Hi all -

I helped a friend with a pump rebuild and U-joint/spline shaft lube on a 98 Merc. Alpha 1, Gen. II this past weekend and had some questions. I have a Gen. I and noticed some differences other than the obvious (water pump).

1) There was no grease fitting on the U-joints. How do these get greased? We called a local marina and they said it may be a "grease-less" U-joint. Does this seem right??

2) After re-assemling and checking operation, I noticed water squirting out of a hole on the outdrive. It was located just above and behind where the spedo connection is made - behind where the shifting components meet between the two halves (this is hard to explain). The hole is on the housing, just below where the exhaust bellows connect to the outdrive. I don't have this on my Gen. I and was just enquiring about its' purpose. The boat runs fine. I'm guessing it has something to do with the exhaust.

Thanks, as always, for the great info!!

- Jeff

Re: Alpha One, Gen. II Questions

Item number 1, they are called permilube joints. They are permanently lubed, right up to when they fail ;) I have the same thing on my '97 Alpha 1, gen II. Not sure if it is a gen II thing, or was just phased in at a particular time.
