Just changed out the impeller in my 87 alpha one outdrive along with the housing assbl. Got everything on with no prob, issue now is driveshaft is hard to turn by hand. Is this normal with a new impeller? Dont wanna put the whole drive back together until i'm sure. Thanks.

Re: Alpha one impeller help needed.

Depends on how much force you tightened down the nuts for the water pump housing.
There is more resistance with a new impeller but you should be able to turn the input shaft(where the U joints are) with 1 hand

Did you use any lube on the impellar?
Dawn dish soap is fabulous...
As BT said..once the upper and lower are together, you should be able to turn the prop easily from the input shaft..

didnt use any lube on the impeller. that went on fairly easy. it was tough spinning even before I tightened down the housing. Its not spinning very easily via the input shaft. I know its the correct parts. Everything turns fine without the impeller though. I guess i'll rip it apart and lube it up some.

Hi,sorry to revive/steal your thread.

Im doing the impeller on mine.Got the complete kit from sierra with top/lower housing. The impeller is very tight,I put it in the housing and needed alot of force, impossible to spin with fingers, maybe if it was lubed and on the shaft i could spin it?The parts numbers match it just seems to tight to me.

I just changed mine and it was really stiff. After running it with muffs for a few minutes it loosened up.
