Alpha One Linkage Question

Hi All,

Backstory: 1987 Wellcraft, Mercruiser Alpha One 3.0. Out one day idling right before trailering and outdrive makes loud clunk noise. Got it back on, open top cover and find that one of the gears has thrown a tooth, despite full oil.

Solution: Buddy had a complete Gen 1 in his garage, so I got it from him, turned out it was an Alpha upper, R-lower (pre-load pin). Put in a new waterpump, drained oil, and was ready to bolt on

Problem: Got the drive on, but it won't shift correctly. No forward gear, reverse shifts fine, but then engine dies from the cutout switch. I've been messing with this all day and it's killing me. With the other drive, everything was perfect, and it never so much stalled during shifting. Asking for the group's help.

The main thing I notice that seems wrong is that the shift slider isn't straight fore and aft when in forward gear - it's slightly to the left. Other weird thing is now it always dies if you go past idle in reverse. The cutout switch activates and stays stuck until you move the shifter back forward (both with the drive on and off). As I said, I never had a problem with the old drive, and can't imagine why suddenly it's dying. I've taken some pics of both the drive shifter, the shift slider in the bellhousing, and the shift assembly. What could be going on here?

Any help always appreciated, thanks,

Chris

Ayuh,.... My guess is, when you reassembled the lower to the upper, you're Off by a spline....

Thanks Bond-o, that's what I thought too (even took the two halves apart and reassembled). Turned the shift shaft on the lower full counterclockwise and counterturned propshaft and driveshaft to lock it in forward. Then on the upper, put the brass shift rod straight fore and aft, and put back together. This is the way (same shifting positions) that I remember on the other one, and pretty much the same as the Gen II that I'm also working on. Is full forward on the drive supposed to point a little left (like the picture of the bellhousing), or supposed to be straight forwards and backwards (like the picture of the drive)?

Re: Alpha One Linkage Question

That's what I was thinking. Does this mean that my shift cable is toast, or that it just needs to be adjusted? Any idea on why it would work perfectly with my old drive, but not this one?
