Alpha One lower vertical shaft?

I have my Alpha One drive off to do the bellows and other jobs but I have a question about the lower unit vertical shaft.

I removed the water pump base to check the seals underneath and noticed that the vertical shaft feels loose. It will move up and down and also side to side. But if I pull it up so that the top bearing rides in the cup, it becomes firmer with no play and it turns fine.

Is this normal? I mean, during operation, is the shaft forced upwards by the gears? The seals were both good, sharp lips and tight on the shaft.

Perfectly normal .The gearset is cut to push upward setting the preload, older units with the pin push down to set the preload.
