My son, who lives up north, tells me he got water in his lower unit and the shop says the whole thing is shot? He?s weighing his options. Several questions:

1. From information I?ve seen, his gear ratio was originally 1.98 but now it would be replaced with a 1.94 (if he were buying new), is this correct?

2. Could he use any of the other gear sets that were hooked to the larger engines, if so which ones? If the damage was confined to the lower half guess he could get by with just replacing that?

3. Anyone have the procedure for re-installing the merc out drive? How tough is it and are special tools required?

thanks
Bill

1. See the info here on the 1.98/1.94/2.00 ratio changes - http://www.perfprotech.com/store/articles/alpha1-alpha2-sterndrives.aspx.

2. You would need to stick with that gear set range, but you could just replace the lower unit. Assuming they know that it is the only part damaged.

3. I pulled my Alpha One Gen 2 this year to align the engine and it was a straight forward operation. The first link has the service manuals for Mercruiser which I followed. The 2nd link is for SEI outdrives which are a more economical replacement. Given the pricing you could replace the entire thing instead of just the lower unit (although they offer just that) and remove the possibility that damage in the upper unit has been missed.

Thanks so much Dave for the info! Haven't had chance yet to go through it, but will soon.
