Does anyone know if the shift shaft on the pre alpha is any different in size to the alpha one?
I have a rebuilt upper unit which is fine but i noticed that the shift shaft sits about 5mm lower than it should, hence it doesnt engage properley with its counter part. It was suggested that it may have been tinkered with or swapped with a pre alpha.

Don't know about the pre alpha thing, but on an alpha a common mistake is forgetting the stainless steel washer that sits on top of the shift shaft on the lower section. I've made this mistake myself.

DougV>

Just checked the parts book and the shafts have the same part number.I agree with Doug,the washer that sits on the shift shaft in the lower unit is missing.Part # 12-29395.Less than a buck,but you won't shift long without it.
DHP

Re: Alpha one shift shaft question

It keeps the shift "shoe" spaced up to interlock with the "slot". Excuse my lack of better terminology. I'll bet if you seperate the upper and lower cases you will find the washer missing.

DougV>

http://www.mercstuff.com/fiched.htm

look at item #50

http://www.mercstuff.com/alpharemoval.htm

look at step 7b a=drive unit shift shaft coupler
b=coupler slot
the drive unit shaft coupler is forced upward off the shift shaft seal into the coupler slot

Don't forget when you say Alpha I, that there is an Alpha I series and there is also the Alpha I Gen II Series. The Gen II is way different than the Alpha, MR, R, One's etc.
