alpha one shifting issues

I recently looked at a 1997 alpha one drive (connected to a wellcraft) and it seems it would not go easily in gear, forward or reverse, engine not running. I would go to forward then try to turn the prop counterclock and only a little clicking, then finally it caught. Same for reverse, other direction. Neutral was neutral. The weather was very cold. Does anyone think this is just a shift linkage problem or gear. The owner said it shifted at lake during summer, maybe a little chatter before going in gear. thanks and looking forward to hearing from you pro's.

The weather was very cold.

Ayuh,... That's quite possibly the reason,....

Or,.. The lower shift cable,..
Or,.. The Adjustments,..
Or,.. The Shift spool,..
Or,.. Etc....

You could try shooting everything with corrosion pro. Won't hurt anything i occasionally shoot everything anyway. Maybe make it work easier.

Or cables have been known to go bad.

Re: alpha one shifting issues

While some people have said it could be bad cable, parts etc.... the correct answer is.....
An alpha is not designed to shift with the engine not running.
Sure you can push on the lever... and if the clutch is somewhat aligned in the lower, it will probably go in... but you'll be binding the shift cable.
If the clutch is not aligned at all.... and the high spots on the clutch in line with the high spots on the gears, all your going to do is bind the shift cables.
