Hi.

Okay, I'm having issues with my speedometer, in so much as it doesn't work. Now, I know why. The boat's currently out of the water, and I found in the outdrive the connection for the speedometer tube. Seems there's a plastic piece that screws into the outdrive which has barbs sticking which you jam the speedometer tube into (and clamp down).

Well, I found the plastic piece still screwed into the outdrive.

I also found the plastic barbs jammed into the speedometer tube and clamped down.

The problem is the piece had broken in half, and so the speedometer cable was hanging loose.

I've ordered another part (about $10), but have to wait for it to come in. In the meantime I'm planning on putting the boat back in the water. Here's the thing, I managed to pry the barbs out of the speedometer tube, but unscrewing the piece from the outdrive is proving really, really tricky.

It's hex shaped, and a #12 socket fits perfectly over it, but there's some bolt above it that's keeping me from getting a ratchet in there. The piece is plastic, so it tends to slip and deform easily it I try and use pliers. It's too tight to hand-loosen. So, is there an easy way to do this, preferably without taking it (again) out of the water? Am I right to assume I just screw the new plastic piece in, connect and clamp the speedometer tube, and I'm off to the races?

Thanks

Re: Alpha One Speedometer

Outdrive is not an outboard, Hauger. It is part of an I/O.

I will move this for you.

My Fault, not reading the forum titles close enough.

Thanks for moving it.

Not sure what you are talking about. The Bravo series uses a fitting that is shaped like a cross, and is a "twist and lock" deal. Half turn, pull it up and out of the ventilation plate. I thought Alphas were the same.
Got a photo?

That is not what a Bravo looks like, indeed. But I don't think that's a "nut". I think that is still a "fitting" that is pressed in there. And it's broken. Have you tried needle nosed pliers to pull it up and out? Since it's already broken, you can't really mess it up?!

Re: Alpha One Speedometer

It very well might be a fitting. Thing is, the boat's back in the water right now, so trying to fix it might have to wait a while till I get to pulling it back out. On the happy side, I've ordered and the part has come into the marina, so looking at the part in an unbroken/uninstalled state should give me a good idea on how to jimmy the old part out. Maybe for other's future reference, I'll post pics once I have the new fitting and explain how the install went.
