I have a 1986 3.0L Mercruiser with an Alpha One Outdrive. I recently replaced the impeller and when re-inserting the long drive shaft into the upper gear housing I noticed the oil seal(s) were thrashed and fell out. A spring ring that was with the rubber seal stayed stuck in the upper gear housing. How important is this oil seal? Will I get an oil leak without it? Can I replace it without much difficulty? Thanks for letting me ask stupid questions here.

Yes, thank-you Bondo. I have a schematic of the two seals but no part number. Can someone tell me those numbers... Thanks again

just went through the same thing when replacing my lower unit. You only need the lower seal, it is Quicksilver part # 965031. The lower seal can get mangled as you pull the lower unit off. The upper seal is usually not affected when you remove the lower unit, and besides, you'd have to disassemble the unit to get to it, vs the lower you can pop it in from underneath.

What do you use to pop it out with. It looks like there is a retainer cup, is this true and if i try to pull on it, is there replacement part for it?
