Hey everyone. I have a 1987 Mercruiser Alpha 1 outdrive.

I'm trying to adjust the trim tab on it but don't have the right size allen wrench and need to go and get one. Does anyone know that correct size allen wrench I'll need for this?

Some of the older ones also used a 3/8 allen

A while back I went through a similar and THOUGHT I did not have the right size key only to find that the head was filled with crud and mud so the key would not enter the head.Charlie

I couldn't find any allen wrenches that were sold as singles except for the ones that come attached to a socket. I don't think that would be long enough, so I just bought a new set of allen wrenches. It includes the 5/16 & the 3/8, so I should be all set. It was only $11 at home depot.

Good luck, with the wrench, the reason I knew the the 1987 alpha is 5/16 (at least mine was)was because when I was splitting my upper/lower cases, I couldn't get the trim tab bolt loose with the wrench, was bending the wrench and was starting to feel like the head was getting warbled out, so I had to come to town, 30 miles, to get the socket so I could use my 3/8 impact. Had it out in 1/2 a second, after an hours drive. That's how it goes for this shadetree mechanic anyway.
