Anyone have any past experience using a speedi sleeve on one of these U joint yokes to stop it from leaking?

Every year I have been having issues with one of my drives leaking oil because it's got a bit of a wear on the shaft where the seal rides.

It will hold 15psi for a week on my stand in the garage, but every year it's the same thing, I take it out and the u joint is wet with gear oil. Hell, it's still holding pressure on my bench for a day or two before it bleeds off 5 psi or so. I pressurized it Saturday to 15psi and today when I left for work it was only down to 9psi.

I'm figuring a speedi sleeve would solve the issue. Loooks like the cheapest and easiest solution from what i'm seeing.

Yes, the seal itself has been changed...every year I put a new one on it and cleaned the surface with 800 sandpaper. The groove is barely noticeable, but it appears to be bad enough to leak under usage but not bad enough to not allow the drive to hold pressure on the bench.

Anyone do this and if so,how did it work out?

Also, if anyone has the part number to the sleeve it would be appreciated.

Whose seal are you using? #800 is still too rough ,the surface should be polished smooth and shiny
Might try using the National 712250 seal

Ayuh,..... I have,...... Put the cleaned yoke in the freezer, 'n heat the speedi-sleeve in yer toaster oven,.......

Then just drop the sleeve onto the yoke,......

Drivin' it on can ruin the sleeve, 'n the break-off driver portion of the sleeve will become a problem,......

Once done, the yoke is better than new,.....

^+1...... or use a heat gun to heat up the sleeve...

and wear welding gloves when you pick it up

Used speedi-sleeves a lot when I had my shop. Never had one fail. As noted, installation is the key. Use a bit of Loctite Master gasket sealer (515) on the yoke before you slip the sleeve on.

That seal I listed is the original one used on the Alpha`s 483323VGO. Mercruiser tried the CR seal and it was a total failure. They were losing drives under warranty from oil loss. I have no idea what the current seal is but the National one is the only one I will use

Thanks for the advice.

Seals and gaskets are funny things. I'll only use Felpro head gaskets when I work on cars because I trust the product.

i'll give it a try along with the speedi sleeve
