Alpha One - what is this next to the shift rod

I am in the process of installing the SEI conversion kit for CObra. The SEI116 is an exact copy of the Mercruiser Alpha One gen II.

As i am installing everything I have no ideal what this is. Not something I had on my cobra. It looks like some sort of a vent tube with a red o-ring

do I need to connect this to anything? Leave it alone?

It's for the speedometer Hose.
