hi, I have a friend with a alpha outdrive that will not shift in forward or rev after engine ran hot. The control box and cables are new. I suspect something in the upper gear case shift linkage melted or was damaged when it ran hot due to bad manifolds. Does anybody have experience with this outdrive and can give me some pointers or advice on this repair? maybe tell me what will be needed before I take it apart?

a overheat fuses the cable together and you cannot move the control box handel to shift. to remove the drive in fwd you have to remove the lower then the upper or cut the shift cable just behind the bellow and move the shift shoe by hand

Are you saying the control is frozen and will not move, or the control moves but will not go forward or reverse. The overheat may have not been the CAUSE of the problem, it may have been the RESULT of a coupler or outdrive failure.

Ayuh,..... Agreed,.... Disconnect the lower shift cable from the shift switch plate, 'n I'm bettin' the control will work just fine,....
Replace the lower shift cable, 'n it'll shift again,...
Probably gonna need new exhaust shutters, 'n rubber couplers at the top of the y-pipe too,...
