Outside of letting the rams bounce off the concrete (paint chipped) and laying the drive on the concrete (paint scraped up), that's how it's done.

(BTW, I saw a commercial for a local auto shop one day where they were showing the mechanic doing a break job... The brake caliper was dangling from it's hydraulic hose )

years ago in high school auto shop we had videos that showed how and how not to do things. the how not to was performed by a guy named Primative Pete. watching this video brought back some memories.

I think i would get upset if i saw my mechanic doing this to my boat. or is this how it's done?

Well, you can't be gentle with them and expect them to come off. ;)

Is it the lifting and dropping that has you bothered? That's usually what you have to do to break them free. You do want to make sure the boat is high enough off the ground so the skeg doesn't hit when it's dropped. But otherwise, looks "normal" to me.

Ayuh,... If it's rusted, or corroded, you'll be Beatin' a 'ell of alot Harder than that guy is....

That 1 came off Easy....

With really Bad 1s, you tie the rams up outa the way, slip a block of wood up, 'n under the transom,...
Then pick it up, 'n SLAM it down just as Hard you Can,...
Mulitple times...

I do like the idea of putting all the nuts and washers on the floor. Easy to kick out of the way, rather you want to or not.

My wife keeps asking why I keep all my old coffee cans. The new plastic ones with the lids that fit nice and tight do the trick for me. ;)

Yea I have to agree with that you can't be gentle with them most of the time, but putting the nuts/washers on the floor, and taking the trim rods off with the drive trimmed up is kinda silly, being that when you go to put it back on, you either have to trim the rods down and line them up perfectly, or hold the drive up in the air while you put the pin in.

Also, most of the time you don't have to bang those pins so hard as he did when the drive is down

Re: alpha removal, is this how it's done?

I asked the question out of pure ignorance. I have been boating since 1974, and have been a boat owner since 1991, all outboards though. I have just bought my first sterndrive last year and browse around online trying to educate myself as all of the repairs and maint. i will do myself. I've twisted alot of wrenches over the years working on this and that and have learned over the years that reaching for the bigger hammer is always the last resort. I didn't expect to see all of the banging and beating taking place right from the start. I'm planning on pulling mine to lube and align this year, without watching this and asking the question, i would have been pulling my hair out. thanks guys.

If everything is ok inside your bellhousing, when you remove that last nut, the drive should just back away from the bellhousing on it's own. Only problems cause them to come off hard and require bouncing like that. The guy in the video just did take the time to find out, just beat things to death first.

I've seen worse! The thing that gets me, out of all the videos on youtube, they all show you how to remove a drive unit, but I have yet to find one when someone is putting it back on with new gaskets and seals etc.. Aligned correct... with the cable tab tool for a alpha drive. Why is that??? Got all these hows to with impellors etc.. but no putting this back on, even the lower unit after a impellor install. LOL!

I'll show you how to tear everything apart..................................

Then you'll have to bring it to me to put it back together............
