Alpha Sticking in Reverse

I had bellows, trim senders and shift cable replaced in the spring on my 2001 Alpha Drive. When I put the boat in reverse and try to go to neutral it seems tight and then I have to go past neutral to get out of reverse. I tried adjusting cable at linkage and so did the mechanic.
He now states there seems to be too much free play from the cable from the controller and is going to replace the shift and throttle cables with Teleflex Extreme cables.
Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Make sure the shift interrupt switch is working.
