Not sure what you read, but in Mercruiser lingo, Alpha is a type of outdrive. Some refer to them a "Pre Alpha" (no such thing really, slang name for MC-1 drive) which is the drives that were eventually called Alpha I and Alpha I Gen II that are use now.

Alpha as in the alpha one sterndrive gen 1 or gen 2, that any motor Mercruiser makes with less then 300hp usually is running.
But when buying parts for an alpha drive you want alpha parts because there is an identical design as the alpha Made by SEI, it's a cheaper version as the alpha and you really don't want to mix parts.

That may be where the confusion is.
