Yup. 1 litre to a full size tank. It'll be smokey.

Re: also a mixing 2 stroke oil ??

I had a '58 18 hp Rude when I was a kid. Paid $400 for it after working all summer to get the money. Kept it in my room (less the tank) so nothing would happen to it. It ran on 24:1 also.

That was back in the days when you put automotive oil in the fuel cause there twernt any 2 stroke high performance oil like is available today.

That was also the time that a valve job on a car came around at about 45,000 miles, engine overhauls at 100,000 and oil changes and grease jobs at 1000 miles. I realize valves today are Stellite coated to run without lead, but main bearings and all are still tin/copper plated. Ball bearings are still ball bearings. My new trucks have ZERO zerks to grease for the life of the vehicle. Had '88 and '98 p/u trucks and drove both 10/9 years with sealed (no greasing required by owner) ball joints. Had no problems.

I was in WW the other day and saw Mobil 1 GUARANTEED for 15,000 miles between changes. Guy on here (trailers section) just traded off his Chevy Blazer with over 250,000 miles for a new tow vehicle....said it had a lot of life left in it............Hmmmmmmm

I don't remember the last time I had to tear into an engine on any of my cars.

Don't suppose oil technology had anything to do with that now do you? Obviously removing lead from gasoline did it's share of helping out too.

Sorry for the rant, but people just don't accept the fact that oil of today is not oil of '58 when your engine was built and the service manual was written. So why should it run at the same smelly, engine fouling mix ratio?

Correct me if im wrong Mark but didnt the older engines(2 stroke) use different bearings than slightly newer ones, thus the need for added oil.Id love to be wrong ,that would save a lot of oil.

Apples and oranges.

I'm not saying that you are wrong, TM. In fact, I'm inclined to agree with you. However, if OMC/BRP still doesn't recommend 50:1 in that engine then I cetainly wouldn't use it. I run 24:1 in all my 50's OMC's using Amsoil and it smokes less than my 1988 30 hp at 50:1 using conventional. For the price of oil why would you even risk it?

I believe that motor has roller and needle bearings. I don't think it has any friction bearings, but I could be wrong.

Re: also a mixing 2 stroke oil ??

Dad had a 10 hp Scott Atwater back in the '50's. I decided to learn how to be an engine mechanic so I dismantled it......not a problem since I had run over a submerged piling and sheared the mid section half in two.....only thing holding the lower half on was the shift rod.

It had needle and roller bearings throughout.....and I lost some of the needle bearings on the rod caps in the process........nobody told me that these things used them....cars didn't......so when I pull the rod cap off they went flying.

But bearings or sleeves (bushings), the oil's job is to provide a lubricating film between metal (bearing) surfaces. If oils did what they were intended for, engines would last forever.

But I'm no OEM 2-cycle design or petroleum engineer. What do I know.

Pure speculation, but I'd still do it in a heartbeat.
