Altenator or Generator on 1981 Johnson 90HP

I first wanted to thank everyone who helped me figure out why my linkage wasnt working - especially Joe Reeves and DHadley who nailed it correctly with the Shift Shaft having been screwed out and changing the alignment.<br /><br />Now that we are running and we are going to launch on our maiden voyage tommorrow, can anyone tell me how teh battery stays charged on these 1981 Johnson 90HP Outboard? Is it an altenator like a car or how does it recharge the battery?

Hey, glad to hear the shift deal was easy to fix. Thanks for the update.<br /><br />The battery gets recharged thru the stator. The smaller stator windings are the part that charges the battery. The larger windings supply voltage to the pack for the ignition.<br /><br />Thats very basic but thats about it. Usually if the tach works, the battery is getting charged. The tach reads off the rectifier or regulator/rectifier.
