318 Chrysler inboard.....The past few days at start-up there is no altenator output. After warm up and upon reaching 4000 rpm the alt. kicks in. The alt. will work all day at any rpm after reaching that 4000. What's up?

Thanks!

Re: Altenator ?

I think I would start with the basics. Things like is the belt the normal width and tight or is it worn enough that it is in the bottom of the V pulleys and slipping? Are the input and output wires clean an tight? Does it have a good ground? Are the Slip ring brushes good? Are the battery cables clean and tight?
Most times I find it is something very simple and cheap to repair.

Yes to all except slip ring brushes. Don't know. I have a spare and will be pulling my alt. this weekend to take a look...... and do some learning. Thanks.
