I have a 1972 40hp Johny that does not have a alt/gen on it. Can I get one to install? I often fish for 2-3 days at a time, where I do not have access to charger, and am worried about running Battery down while out.I only use bat. to start motor. Do I even need to add alt/gen? All other elect. I run off of deep cycles (2). All advice is welcome.
Thanks
Michael

You can probably get all you need to convert it at Twin City Outboards. Personally I wouldn't bother with it and instead go with two deep cycle batteries - one for if the other runs low. Forget about a 'starting' battery - you don't need one for that engine. The starter pulls down less than 50 amps after all.

On that engine, one option was for rope-start only. If your engine isn't equipped with the pull-start on it then just wrap a rope with a knot in the end of it around the flywheel so it turns clockwise when pulled. There's a little notch in the flywheel to accommodate the knot. There is no need for a battery when you start the engine this way - but the key must be in the 'run' position.

Give it a try. After you start it that way, you won't worry about dead batteries. You'll also be surprised at how many starts you can get off of a fully charged battery.

Although there are generator kits available for your motor, they add a great deal of weight, have a fair amount of complicated apparatus to deal with, and any kits you find are already at least 30 years old. As an alternative, try on of the solar cell trickle chargers to keep the batteries up to snuff. They're only a few amps and won't charge a dead battery, but your motor will likely start for several weeks on even a regular 650 cranking amp battery without recharging. The solar chargers might allow you to go the whole summer!
- Scott

Thanks guys! I like the idea about the solar chargers, hadn't thought along that line.

I go out for several days at a time. One battery for cranking(no gen on mtr.), the other battery(deep cycle) for T/M, running lights, and other toys. No problems yet.
