Alternative alternator mounting?

Hey all,

I am one of the two teens rebuilding the 29' carter with twin '79 sbc 350's.

We had to turn the manifolds around to make the exhaust work with the new engines and exhaust system. The issue is that our alternator can no longer mount to the manifold.

Does anyone out there know of a mount that will work by just mounting to the block. We have been looking locally, but living on an island really limits parts selection. We went to an automotive store (lordco) their mounts do not attach to the manifold, but the issue is they stick the alternator up too high, so it will not clear the heat exchanger.

As always thanks for the help, I can't even imagine where this project would be without the help from everyone on iboats!!!

Do the engine heads have the extra accessory holes that auto SBCs do? If so you have get a cheap alternator mount that mounts the alternator where the power steering pump usually goes. Does your boat have power steering?

Nope, no power steering. Not too sure where the power steering pump would mount. I would guess the same bolt that the exchanger goes on?

Here is a picture to help out...
Thanks again!

You'll be able to put the alternator in that spot, but you may not be able to find n all ready made a bracket to do it. You might have to have one custom made.

Do you have a short water pump or a long water pump?

That might work, it would be 'iffy' as to whether or not it would clear the stringer/mounts.
I believe we have a short water pump.

You would think there would be a bracket out there that would allow you to mount the alternator to where that long bolt sticking out by the belt is and to where the heat exchanger bolts on...
