Alternative engine designs

I stumbled acrossed a page full of antique alternative engine designs that I thought some of you may enjoy.

Aside of the rotary/wenkel engines and other current production 4 cycle/2 cycle/diesel engines what designs do you see missing?

You gotta luv that who can build the better mouse trap mentality of the engine pioneers.
Besides the wenkel the current desighn with a straight crank seams to be the way things will stay.
Although I was intreaged by a desighn I saw of a head with rotating balls in pockets that rotated like a combo overhead camshaft/valves.
