hey guys, have a new project wellcraft 29 express cruiser
with twin 350 s
would it be possible to wrap exhaust manifolds with heat resistant material (in order to use a standard exhaust manifold) then have the exhaust cooled at the collector before it goes out.
working with direct drives planning on converting to a closed cooling system.

Ayuh,.... Absolutely NOT....
The Manifolds, or Headers absolutely Have to be Water Cooled....

Not only NO but H3LL NO! It would also be flat illegal (USCG regs) in a closed engine compartment boat.

It would also be fairly dangerous.

Cheers,

Ayuh,.... As in a Catastrophic Fire on the maiden voyage....

On an Open bay Jet-boat,... Ya you can Cheat abit...
In a closed motorbox,... It'd be Flames the 1st time it got to Plane....

Is there some reason NOT to use the water jacked manifolds?

well yes and no on absolutely have to be water cooled. lobster boats wrap there exhaust and run vertical stacks and there engines are enclosed.

While the USCG regs do not REQUIRE water jacketing, if you do a dry system you got alot more hoops to jump through. Asbestos board for insulation, with minimum air gaps on BOTH sides of the board - cannot pass through a passanger compartment etc.

Just doesn't make alot of sense to convert a cruiser to dry stacks, especially if you are still going to be using engines that have water jacketed manifolds and risers readily available.

its not that i don t want to use the standard manifolds, i was just kickin around ideas to lighten the load as well as increase performance a little.
not gonna do anything dumb and I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU GUYS LOOKIN OUT FOR ME.
Right now lookin at makin a set of stainless similar to wire2 s

If you're talking about stainless steel jacketed manifolds, yes you could do that no problem......

If you buy them it won't be cheap. If you build them it won't be easy....not impossible, just not easy. (you probably already know that)

Another alternative might be cast aluminum, jacketed manifolds and (aluminum or stainless ) risers....... they're really light but not nearly as expensive as bent tube, welded jacketed stainless headers.

If you could do all the bending/building/welding to make them, then you would have your time and material involved.

I would not do non-jacketed, wrapped headers on an enclosed engine in any pleasure boat.

There's a LOT of choices out there.... Below are some....

Ayuh,.... I've got a set of Kodiack's for a build that's startin' to come together...
They're carbon copies of the Eddie Marine cast aluminum manifolds... Cast in runners,...An inch larger outlet(than stock)...
I even found some Eddie Marine SSteel risers for them..
Not true Headers, but alittle Better than the common dump OEM stuff...
Definitely Lighter...

Where in Lakeland are you gonna use a boat that big???? Your lakes are more like puddles these days! :)

Water jacketed headers are the best. After that, think aluminum manifolds. But not if you plan to run in saltwater (which in a 29' cruiser, in Lakeland, you will be going to the Gulf, I'd bet). Unless of course you get the closed cooling system that includes the exhaust manifolds. Which I would recommend.
