As I was perusing the paint isle getting supplies the other day I wondered if the 3M gel contact cement would work for sealing rivets. For $10 I figured
i'd give it a try. So far it looks promising. Alll the rivets are under the deck so uv exposure won't be a big deal. I keep you upated whether I wasted $10 and made a mess or if it works.

No wait stop :D. The Gluvit is a 2 part epoxy and is waterproof once its setup . I would be skeered to death that the 3m stuff would break down when it got wet . I paid less than $50.00 for a 2 pound kit of Gluvit from my local dealer and feel its well worth it to not have any doubt that my rivets are sealed when I am done . I dont want to have to pull my deck back up for at least 10 years so $50.00 is cheap insurance to me :D.

I don't think the contact cement would break down but it may be too rubbery to paint over, and won't likely adhere well to the aluminum. Gluvit works, it's a bit costly, but again, it works and is well proven. Why chance a real mess to save a couple of $20 bills?

I think I'd chance a couple of good coats of either epoxy paint or a good floor enamel before I'd go with contact cement.

Well, I keep you updated on how it works. It was just one of those things that may cost me double to fix if it doesn't work but I figured I'd do the experiment anyhow. I know that it wont break down in water we patch river rafts every year with the stuff, quite a few bottom patches that are under water for 1-2 weeks at a time. Some of those patches have been on there a long time. And it does stay flexible through inflating and deflating. Never know unless you try I guess. Worst case I have to redo it and hundreds of others doing a restore learn from my stupid mistake.
