Alternative to Ring Free?

I run a 1990 200 Yamaha with 1500 hrs. I do alot of slow going which results in engine bogging down on acceleration for a bit until I get above 4200 rpm for a minute or so. I believe its carbon buildup and plug fouling. Yamaha Ring Free is $8.00 per bottle, and to do a shock treatment on a 60 gal tank is way to expensive. I have seen Techtron/Chevron fuel injector cleaners in auto parts stores for $3.00/bottle. Any danger in using this as a cheaper alternative?

If you read the label on the automotive Techron bottle it says "Not for use in 2-stroke motors".

dude if your that cash strapped you may lookinto a different hobby. mix it up in a 6 gallon tank. no sense in treating all 60 gallons. this aint magic its all about the common sense approach.
good luck and keep posting

Hey rodbolt, no need to get so almighty with your insight...obviously with 1500 hours on one engine, I have spent a few days on the water. Taking your logic, if I could find a one gallon tank, I would clean my engine with less than a 1/4 bottle of ring free. Unfortunately, Ring Free doesn't say how many gallons you have to run for the shock treatment, it just gives the ratio per gallon. I have read that Techtron is used in Ring Free, and was merely trying to find out if there was something else in it that was better than products like Valvtech Carbon Free/Sea Foam/Techtron-Chevron.

Johnnyrude offers Engine Tuner and Merc has the same stuff called Power Tune. It's like oven cleaner, but for your motor. About $8 a can and you can treat several motors with one can, or one motor several times. A can would probably last years. Best of all, results are had in minutes or hours as opposed to miles or gallons.

As far as future carboning, the TCW-3 oils already have pretty good carbon inhibitors in there. I'm not a fan of fuel additives for 2-strokes in general. I'm a big fan of OEM 2-stroke oil and regular gas (preferably without alcohol), maybe some Stabil...that's all. Too many additives mess with the oil's ability to lubricate. 4-strokes are a different animal and that's what most of the additives are intended for. I got no problem with them for those.

Advance Auto parts has Sea Foam 4.98 a can, But I like the BRP Evinrude engine tuner. If the Yamaha has not ben decarbed for 1500 hours, probley take about 2 or 3 cans
