Alternative to SAE20 in reassembled valve lifters?

Hi Guys

I am just pulling apart and re-assembling the valve lifters in my AQ205. The manual calls for SAE20 to be used on reassembly. Marine engineer I speak to is not sure it is completely necessary and thinks the standard engine oil could be used. Engine oil I have is 15W50 synthetic.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Both can be considered "standard" engine oil. They are both intended for use in engines and therefore either one can be used. Automatic transmission fluid was the lubricant of choice for assembly of GM hydraulic valve lifters. Use whatever you have available. After the engine is started, whatever oil is in the engine at the time will quickly replace whatever you used to assemble the lifters. Besides, when the engine was originally built SAE 20 was likely the lube of choice.
